What to know about shipping a car from Florida to Michigan.

This road is busiest in May and June, when people who winter in Florida head north, and if you live in Florida and are sending the car up for the summer, the thing to know before you book is how long Michigan lets it stay on Florida plates. Getting there is one long interstate, with I-75 carrying the truck almost from the Florida line into Detroit, about 1,150 miles from Orlando.

Can my car stay on Florida plates for a summer in Michigan?

For 90 days. Michigan lets a nonresident drive a car registered back home, but its vehicle code says a car kept for personal use can’t be driven there for longer than that without a Michigan registration. A summer from May into September runs past 90 days, so if the car will be up north that long, plan either to bring it back south sooner or to register it in Michigan, which also means taking out a Michigan no-fault policy on it.

Moving to Michigan for good is the simpler case, because the car is registered there straight away and the 90 days never come into it. Keep the Florida insurance until that’s done or the Florida plate has gone back, since Florida suspends the license of anyone who drops the policy on a plate that’s still active.

What does a car need after it arrives in Michigan?

If the move makes you a Michigan resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Title and register the car as soon as you become a Michigan resident. The 90 days a car can run on out-of-state plates apply only to nonresidents.
Where
In person at a Secretary of State office, with your out-of-state registration or title. Visits can be booked online or by phone.
Inspection
None. Michigan has no emissions or safety inspection for private cars, and its checklist for a car titled in another state has no VIN check.
Insurance
Michigan no-fault insurance on the car before you title or register it.
Tax
A car bought in another state owes Michigan's 6% use tax, less the sales tax paid to that state when it gives Michigan the same credit.

Checked September 2026 against Michigan Department of State, Michigan Legislature. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Florida to Michigan?

Shipping a car from Florida to Michigan costs between $800 and $1,400 for open transport, and most of the difference comes from where in Florida it starts, with Jacksonville to Detroit at $800 to $1,050 and Miami to Detroit at $1,100 to $1,400. An enclosed trailer adds about 40 to 70%, and the quote you book holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from Florida to Michigan?

Shipping a car from Florida to Michigan takes an estimated 3 to 5 days. It's about 1,000 miles from Jacksonville to Detroit and nearly 1,400 from Miami, nearly all of it on I-75, and the time on the truck depends on how many other cars the driver picks up and drops off along the way.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

Are tolls included in the price?

Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.

What if my car is damaged?

If you find damage at delivery, note it on the bill of lading before signing. We will manage the claim with the carrier from there.

What happens if weather delays my shipment?

The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.

Can I put stuff in my car when shipping?

You can leave up to 100 pounds of personal items in one piece of luggage, placed in the trunk or cargo area. Some carriers will accept additional weight for an added fee; we can arrange this for you after booking.
