What to know about shipping a car from Florida to Texas.

This move takes a car from one Gulf state to another, and for most of the way the truck is never far from the water. From Miami or Tampa to Houston, Austin or San Antonio the bulk of the trip is on I-10, which follows the coast through the Panhandle, Mobile and New Orleans before it reaches Texas.

Can a hurricane delay a car going from Florida to Texas?

Between June and November it can, and the storm doesn’t have to reach Florida or Texas to do it. With hundreds of miles of this trip running close to the Gulf, a hurricane coming ashore anywhere from the Panhandle to Louisiana stops the truck where it is until the road is safe again, much as one over Tampa or Houston would. Mid-August to mid-October is when that’s most likely, since it’s the peak of the Atlantic season, and car deliveries in a storm’s path have usually picked back up within a week of landfall. That’s why, for a car that has to be in Texas by a fixed day in those weeks, we’d book it with some slack behind the date.

What does a car need after it arrives in Texas?

If the move makes you a Texas resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Register within 30 days of moving to Texas.
Order
Texas insurance first, then an emissions test where one is required, then title and registration in person at the county tax office. Some offices need an appointment.
Inspection
No safety inspection for private cars since January 1, 2025. An emissions test comes before registration in 17 counties around Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth, Austin and El Paso, and in Bexar County (San Antonio) from November 1, 2026. Electric cars and diesels are exempt.
Tax
A $90 new resident tax on a car already registered in your name elsewhere. A car bought out of state owes 6.25% use tax, less any sales tax paid to the other state.

Checked September 2026 against Texas DMV, Texas DPS, TCEQ, Texas Comptroller. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

Car hauling burns diesel. We fund the work to clean it up.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Florida to Texas?

Shipping a car from Florida to Texas costs between $1,000 and $1,550 for open transport. Tampa to Dallas and Tampa to Austin are the cheapest of these routes and Miami to San Antonio the dearest, enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from Florida to Texas?

Shipping a car from Florida to Texas takes an estimated 3 to 5 days. Tampa to Dallas is about 1,100 miles and Miami to San Antonio about 1,380, and the other stops the driver makes on the way move a car around inside that range more than the miles do.

Can I cancel my order?

You can cancel for free up to 7 days before pickup. After that, the deposit is non-refundable.

What if my car is damaged?

If you find damage at delivery, note it on the bill of lading before signing. We will manage the claim with the carrier from there.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

What happens if weather delays my shipment?

The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

Are tolls included in the price?

Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.
