Texas and Michigan trade about the same number of people each way, and the drive between them is a plain one, northeast through Arkansas and then north, about 1,200 miles from Dallas to Detroit. If the car is one you’re buying in Texas rather than one you already own, the part that needs care happens at the sale, before the truck arrives.
Not if you give the seller the Comptroller’s Form 14-312 when you buy it. Texas doesn’t tax a car bought for use outside the state, as long as it isn’t used in Texas except to take it out and isn’t registered there, and a car that goes from the seller’s lot straight onto a truck is as plain a case of leaving as there is. The form is handed over at the sale, so bring it with you rather than trying to sort it out afterwards. Michigan then charges its 6% when you title the car at the Secretary of State, on the price or the car’s market value, whichever is higher.
A private sale works differently, because the seller in Texas may take the plates and the registration sticker when you buy, so when we arrive the car can be sitting there with none on it. What you need in hand before pickup is the title signed over to you, with the date of sale and the odometer reading, and the seller’s Form 130-U showing the price, since Michigan starts from that price when it works out the tax.
