What is enclosed car shipping?

Enclosed car shipping moves your car in a covered, insulated trailer, out of the weather and off the open road. It is the standard for collector, exotic, vintage, and show cars, and for anything where original paint or low mileage makes the car hard to replace.

It costs more than open, by 30 to 45%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars and far fewer carriers run them. What you get for the premium is protection from road debris and weather, and a smaller, more specialized pool of carriers.

What enclosed transport includes

A covered, insulated trailer

The car rides fully enclosed, insulated against heat and cold and closed to weather, dust, and road debris the whole way.

Soft tie-downs

Secured with soft straps over the wheels. No chains, no hooks on the body, nothing touching the paint or the chrome.

$250,000 in cargo coverage

Enclosed carriers carry $250,000 in cargo insurance as standard. If your car is worth more, we look for a carrier whose policy covers its value before we book.

Carriers with a track record

We give enclosed loads to carriers with years on the road and top ratings. For a very low car, we look for a lift-gate trailer, though those are less common.

How much more does enclosed transport cost?

Enclosed transport runs 30 to 45% more than open. The math on a typical $1,000 shipment looks like this.

Open multi-car carrier with cars visible on two decks
Open transport

$1,000

Standard multi-car trailer. Your car rides exposed to the weather alongside up to nine other vehicles. The default choice for most cars.

Enclosed box trailer, covered, no cars visible
Enclosed transport

$1,300 to $1,450

Covered trailer. Protects against weather and road debris. Used for classics, collectors, low-clearance sports cars, and luxury vehicles.

The premium covers a different kind of trailer, a more selective driver pool, and usually higher insurance limits, since enclosed carriers haul higher-value vehicles.

Four things that set us apart.

Insured Transport

Insured under federal cargo liability requirements. Coverage is part of the quote, not an add-on.

The Price is the Price

Door-to-Door

Most shipments run door to door. If access is tight (narrow streets, low clearance), we will arrange a nearby meeting point.

1% for the Planet

One percent of every booking funds Clean Air Task Force, a nonprofit working on transport and energy emissions.

Why two enclosed quotes for the same route can differ.

Enclosed pricing moves on different inputs than open. Four things drive the number.

Carrier availability

Far fewer enclosed carriers run nationally than open. Routes with limited enclosed coverage cost more, especially for low-clearance or oversize cars that need a lift gate.

Seasonality

Snowbird and concours season, October to April, drives enclosed demand up on routes between collector-car hubs. Summer is calmer.

Vehicle clearance and size

Low-clearance sports cars and supercars need a lift-gate trailer instead of a standard ramp. Lift-gate trailers are scarcer and cost more.

How far ahead you book

Enclosed runs on a smaller carrier pool, so notice matters more than on open. Book a week or two ahead and we can match an enclosed carrier already on your route; tight notice means fewer options and a higher price.

Car shipping cost by distance and carrier type

Most shipments fall within these ranges. Distance is the biggest single factor; the carrier type adds 30 to 45% for enclosed.

Distance Open Enclosed
Under 500 miles $500 to $800 $750 to $1,150
500 to 1,500 miles $800 to $1,300 $1,200 to $1,800
1,500 to 2,500 miles $1,000 to $1,700 $1,500 to $2,400
Coast to coast $1,200 to $1,900 $1,800 to $2,800

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does enclosed car shipping cost?

Enclosed car shipping runs about $750 to $1,150 under 500 miles and $1,800 to $2,800 coast to coast, which is 30 to 45% more than open. The exact number depends on the car, the route, and the season.

Is enclosed car shipping worth it?

Enclosed is worth the 30 to 45% premium for collector, exotic, vintage, low-clearance, or show cars, anything you'd rather not see exposed to weather and road debris. For a standard car you drive every day, open transport protects it fine and costs less.

What does enclosed transport protect against?

Weather, road debris, dust, and the rocks and grit kicked up on the highway. The car rides in a covered, insulated trailer instead of open to the road alongside other vehicles.

Is my car insured on an enclosed trailer?

Yes. Enclosed carriers carry $250,000 in cargo insurance as standard. If your car is worth more than that, we look for a carrier whose policy covers its full value before we book.

How is my car secured in an enclosed trailer?

With soft straps over the wheels. No chains, no hooks on the body, nothing touching the paint or the chrome. That is the standard for enclosed collector transport.

Can you ship a low-clearance car enclosed?

Yes. For a very low car we look for an enclosed trailer with a lift gate, which loads at a shallow angle instead of up a ramp. Those trailers are less common, so tell us the ground clearance up front and we'll source one.

Are enclosed trailers climate controlled?

Enclosed trailers are insulated, which shields the car from heat and cold on the road. Actively climate-controlled trailers exist but are rare. If your car needs one, tell us and we'll see what's available on your route.

How long does enclosed car shipping take?

Transit is the same as open, 1 to 8 days depending on distance. The difference is on the front end: far fewer enclosed carriers run nationally, so lining one up can add a little to the pickup window.

Open or enclosed?

If it's a car you drive every day, open is the practical choice.

Enclosed earns its 30 to 45% premium for collector, exotic, low-clearance, and show cars. For a standard car you drive regularly, open transport protects it fine and costs less. We won't move you to enclosed for a car that doesn't need it.
