Leaving Florida for California, a car starts by going north. It has to get off the peninsula before it can turn west on I-10, which from Miami means close to 400 miles, from Orlando or Tampa under 200, while from Jacksonville the truck is on I-10 almost straight away. After that it’s the long run west, four to eight days in all, and between June and November a storm near the pickup can also push the start back a few days.
If you’re buying the car in Florida rather than moving with it, check two things before you pay for it and before we pick it up. One is the emissions label under the hood, because California won’t register a car its own resident bought with under 7,500 miles unless it was built for California. The other is flood history. Florida’s hurricanes put flooded cars on the market, and not all of them carry a flood title, so run the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck, which shows whether a participating insurer has written the car off.
After it’s delivered, and before California will register it. Florida stopped testing emissions in July 2000, so a car that has spent its life there has probably never had a test, and no inspector has looked at what’s been fitted under the hood. That matters for a modified car, since an aftermarket intake, exhaust or tuner that changes the emission controls fails the California check unless the part carries a CARB Executive Order number. So if yours has been modified, look for that label before it ships, and book the smog check for the first days after delivery, because California’s 20 days to register are already running by then.
