What to know about shipping a car from New York to California.

This is a coast to coast run, close to 2,800 miles from Manhattan to Los Angeles and most of a week on the interstate. The car makes the whole trip as a New York car, on its New York plates and its New York insurance, and it stays one until California has registered it, which can only happen after delivery.

What happens to my New York plates?

They go back to the DMV, by mail or at an office, once the car has its California registration, and that’s the moment the New York insurance can end, not before. New York never accepts another state’s policy on a car it has registered, so even after you’ve moved, the car on the truck still needs New York coverage, and it keeps needing it through the days California takes to register it.

Cancelling the New York policy first is the mistake that costs something, because the DMV counts it as a lapse and suspends the registration. It can suspend your New York license too, which can then hold up the California license you’re about to apply for. It can be undone, though. Copies of your California registration and insurance, sent to the DMV, let it reduce the lapse or clear it.

What does a car need after it arrives in California?

If the move makes you a California resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Register within 20 days of becoming a resident or taking a job in California.
VIN check
The car is checked in person before California will register it, by a DMV employee, a police officer or a licensed vehicle verifier. It has to have arrived first.
Emissions
A smog certificate from a California smog station for most cars, including gasoline cars from 1976 on. Electric cars are exempt.
Tax
A California resident who buys a car out of state and brings it in within 12 months owes California use tax, usually paid at registration, less sales tax paid to the other state.

Checked September 2026 against California DMV, California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to California?

Shipping a car from New York to California costs between $1,700 and $2,200 for open transport. Enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more, rising with distance. New York City to Los Angeles runs $1,800 to $2,100, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from New York to California?

Shipping a car from New York to California takes an estimated 5 to 8 days. It's close to 2,800 miles from New York City to Los Angeles and a little over 2,900 to San Francisco, so the truck spends most of a week on the interstate whichever coast city it's heading for.

How far ahead should I book?

One to two weeks ahead is enough on most routes. Busy corridors handle shorter notice, and quieter lanes benefit from the full two weeks. Booking earlier does not lower the price; it settles your dates sooner, and the quote is locked for 28 days either way.

What happens if weather delays my shipment?

The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

Can I put stuff in my car when shipping?

You can leave up to 100 pounds of personal items in one piece of luggage, placed in the trunk or cargo area. Some carriers will accept additional weight for an added fee; we can arrange this for you after booking.

Are tolls included in the price?

Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.
