The drive across is the simple part of this move, even though it spans the whole width of the country. For most of its four to eight days on the truck the car follows I-10 along the southern edge, through Phoenix, El Paso, Houston and New Orleans, and what needs thought is Florida’s clock for registering it, which starts with your new job rather than with the car’s arrival. Between June and November a hurricane near the coast can also hold a delivery for a few days.
Ideally before you do. Florida counts its 10 days to register a car from your first day at work there, or from the day your children start at a Florida public school, and a car loaded the week you start can spend most of those days on I-10. If it can’t leave earlier, the registration doesn’t have to wait for it, because Florida’s VIN check form can be signed by a notary in California. With the form signed before we pick the car up, you can take it and the title to the county tax collector while the car is still on the road. Back in California, the DMV only needs to be told where the car is registered now, and if you’d paid the California registration before it was due, you can ask for a refund.
