Georgia gets more newcomers from California than from any state outside the South, around 14,000 in 2024, and for their cars it’s a long trip but a plain one. From Los Angeles the usual road is I-10 across the desert and then I-20 through Dallas and Birmingham into Atlanta, about 2,200 miles, with Savannah and Augusta a few hours further on. What needs planning comes at the Georgia end, where the car is taxed and registered.
It’s 7% of the car’s value, paid once at the county tag office when the car is titled, and it takes the place of sales tax, so Georgia charges nothing else on the sale. The value is the one the state assigns, and that isn’t always the price you paid, so it’s worth running the state’s online estimator while you’re still agreeing a price. The car itself is usually the easy part. California salts only its mountain roads, which is why a car that has lived near the coast rarely shows the underbody rust a Midwest car of the same age can, though one from around Tahoe is worth a look underneath.

If the move makes you a Georgia resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Shipping a car from California to Georgia costs between $1,750 and $2,500 for open transport. Enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more, rising with distance. San Diego to Atlanta sits near the bottom of that range and San Francisco to Atlanta near the top, and the price you book holds for 28 days.
Shipping a car from California to Georgia takes an estimated 4 to 7 days. The trip runs roughly 2,140 to 2,470 miles, and a delivery to Savannah or Augusta comes after Atlanta, a few hours further east.
A Georgia driver's license first, then a visit to the county tag office within 30 days of your move, with Georgia insurance already filed by your insurer. A new resident pays a one-time title tax of 3% of the car's value there. In the 13 metro Atlanta counties, a gasoline car from model years 2002 to 2023 also has to pass an emissions test before it can be registered, so the car needs to arrive early enough in those 30 days to be tested.
Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.
One to two weeks ahead is enough on most routes. Busy corridors handle shorter notice, and quieter lanes benefit from the full two weeks. Booking earlier does not lower the price; it settles your dates sooner, and the quote is locked for 28 days either way.
If you find damage at delivery, note it on the bill of lading before signing. We will manage the claim with the carrier from there.
Open transport is the standard choice for most vehicles. Enclosed transport costs 40 to 70% more and is appropriate for high-value vehicles, classics, low-clearance sports cars, and any car where weather exposure or road debris is a real concern.
Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.
Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.
