More people moved from California to Texas in 2024 than made any other move between two states, about 77,000 of them, and a car shipped along with that move spends most of the trip on I-10. The truck runs east through Phoenix, Tucson and El Paso straight into San Antonio and Houston, and a car bound for Dallas turns off onto I-20 in west Texas.
At one spot it does, a few miles inside New Mexico. West of Lordsburg the interstate crosses a dry lakebed, and when a strong wind lifts the dust off it, visibility drops so fast that the state shuts the road until the air clears, which it did close to 40 times in the ten years to 2022. Spring is the windiest time there, but February gales and July storms have closed it too, so no month is clear of it. A truck caught at a closure waits for the road to reopen or takes a long detour, and either way the delivery can come in later than its estimate.

Shipping a car from California to Texas takes an estimated 3 to 6 days, depending on the two cities. The route runs roughly 1,350 to 1,930 miles, most of it on I-10, where blowing dust off a dry lakebed in southwest New Mexico sometimes closes the road until the air clears.
Texas adds a $200 electric vehicle fee when it first registers a fully electric car from another state, and the same $200 every year at renewal. The fee has applied since September 1, 2023, on top of the normal registration fees, and hybrids and plug-in hybrids don't pay it. An electric car also skips the emissions test some Texas counties require before registration.
Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.
Wash the car so its condition is easy to record, photograph it from each corner, and leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Take out anything above the 100 pound personal item allowance, and take your toll transponder such as FasTrak, E-ZPass or SunPass off the windshield, because toll gantries can read it while the car rides the truck. Have a working key ready for the driver.
