What to know about shipping a car from New York to Florida.

Florida is where New York loses more people than anywhere else, but not every car on this run is moving house. Plenty go down for the winter and come home in spring, and that changes more about the shipment than the trip itself does, which is three to five days on the truck, because a car that is only visiting Florida stays a New York car the whole time it’s there.

What if my New York inspection runs out while the car is in Florida?

New York will mail you an extension. A Florida garage can’t renew a New York sticker, so the extension stands in for one and gives you 10 days from the car’s return to New York to get it inspected. It takes about two weeks to arrive, which is why it’s worth asking for before the car leaves rather than once the date has passed. Keep it in the car, not on the windshield, and since the DMV can’t promise it prevents a ticket elsewhere, check with Florida whether an expired New York sticker counts against you there.

Florida lets a visiting car keep its New York plates while the registration is current, until you take a job there or enroll a child in a Florida public school. Through the season the car also stays on its New York policy, because New York won’t accept any other insurance on a car it has registered.

A car moving down for good goes the other way round. Florida registers it first, and only then do the plates go back to the New York DMV and the New York policy end, since New York treats a gap in coverage on a car still registered there as a reason to suspend the registration.

What does a car need after it arrives in Florida?

If the move makes you a Florida resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Register within 10 days of starting work in Florida or enrolling children in a Florida public school.
VIN check
An out-of-state car needs its VIN checked in person before Florida will title it. A notary, a police officer or a licensed dealer in any state can do it and sign the form, so it can be done before the car ships.
Inspection
No emissions or safety inspection.
Insurance
A Florida policy with personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage liability.
Fees and tax
A $225 fee on a car's first Florida registration. A car bought out of state in the last six months owes 6% state sales tax plus local surtax, less tax paid to the other state.

Checked September 2026 against Florida Statutes 320 and 627, U.S. EPA, Pinellas County Tax Collector. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to Florida?

Shipping a car from New York to Florida costs between $750 and $1,400 for open transport. Enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more. New York City to Orlando sits near the bottom of that range and Albany to Miami near the top, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from New York to Florida?

Shipping a car from New York to Florida takes an estimated 3 to 5 days. From the city it's a little over 1,000 miles to Orlando and nearly 1,300 to Miami, more from Albany or Buffalo, and the time on the truck depends on how many other cars the driver collects and drops along the way.

How far ahead should I book?

One to two weeks ahead is enough on most routes. Busy corridors handle shorter notice, and quieter lanes benefit from the full two weeks. Booking earlier does not lower the price; it settles your dates sooner, and the quote is locked for 28 days either way.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

Should I choose open or enclosed transport?

Open transport is the standard choice for most vehicles. Enclosed transport costs 40 to 70% more and is appropriate for high-value vehicles, classics, low-clearance sports cars, and any car where weather exposure or road debris is a real concern.

How do I ship a car?

To ship a car, request a quote with your origin, destination, and vehicle details. Sequoia matches you with a driver according to your pickup window, the driver picks up your vehicle, and delivers it at your destination.

Can I put stuff in my car when shipping?

You can leave up to 100 pounds of personal items in one piece of luggage, placed in the trunk or cargo area. Some carriers will accept additional weight for an added fee; we can arrange this for you after booking.
