What to know about shipping a car from Maryland to Florida.

I-95 runs from Baltimore almost all the way to Miami, so a car going from Maryland to Florida spends most of its three to five days on the truck on a single interstate, and after Virginia and Pennsylvania, Florida is where more Marylanders move than anywhere else. If you’re moving with the car, the Maryland errand is the plates, which go back to the MVA before the Maryland insurance can end. The lane takes more thought when the car has been bought in Maryland by someone who lives in Florida.

Will anyone inspect a Maryland car I buy from Florida?

Not unless you arrange it. Maryland inspects a used car when it’s titled in Maryland, so a car sold to someone in another state leaves without that check, and the last one it had may be years old. With a Maryland car the place to look is underneath, because the state salts its roads every winter and brake lines are what it corrodes. So before you book the truck, get someone to see the car on a lift, either a shop near the seller or a mobile inspector, and ask for photos of the underside if neither is possible.

What does a car need after it arrives in Florida?

If the move makes you a Florida resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Register within 10 days of starting work in Florida or enrolling children in a Florida public school.
VIN check
An out-of-state car needs its VIN checked in person before Florida will title it. A notary, a police officer or a licensed dealer in any state can do it and sign the form, so it can be done before the car ships.
Inspection
No emissions or safety inspection.
Insurance
A Florida policy with personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage liability.
Fees and tax
A $225 fee on a car's first Florida registration. A car bought out of state in the last six months owes 6% state sales tax plus local surtax, less tax paid to the other state.

Checked September 2026 against Florida Statutes 320 and 627, U.S. EPA, Pinellas County Tax Collector. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Maryland to Florida?

Shipping a car from Maryland to Florida costs between $800 and $1,100 for open transport. Enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more. Silver Spring to Fort Myers sits near the bottom of that range and Baltimore to Naples near the top, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from Maryland to Florida?

Shipping a car from Maryland to Florida takes an estimated 3 to 5 days. Most of these routes run a little over 1,000 miles down I-95 to the southern half of the state, and the time on the truck depends on how many other cars the driver collects and drops on the way.

Are tolls included in the price?

Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

Should I choose open or enclosed transport?

Open transport is the standard choice for most vehicles. Enclosed transport costs 40 to 70% more and is appropriate for high-value vehicles, classics, low-clearance sports cars, and any car where weather exposure or road debris is a real concern.

What if my car is damaged?

If you find damage at delivery, note it on the bill of lading before signing. We will manage the claim with the carrier from there.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

What happens if weather delays my shipment?

The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.
