What to know about shipping a car from Ohio to Florida.

A car bought in Ohio shortly before a move to Florida raises one question worth settling before it ships, which is whether Florida will tax it again. Getting it there is simple, because from Toledo, Dayton or Cincinnati the car can ride I-75 nearly the whole way, and it’s a well used road, since Florida is where more people leaving Ohio go than anywhere else.

Will I pay sales tax again in Florida on a car I bought in Ohio?

Usually not, because Ohio has already charged more than Florida would. Ohio collects its tax when the car is titled, at the rate of the county you live in, which comes to between 6.5% and 8%, and Florida only asks for the difference between what you paid in another state and its own 6%. So on a car bought shortly before the move there is no Florida state tax left to pay, and what may remain is the county surtax, which Florida charges on only the first $5,000 of the price. A car you’ve owned and driven in Ohio for six months or more is treated as not bought for Florida at all, so one you’ve had a while doesn’t raise the question.

What does a car need after it arrives in Florida?

If the move makes you a Florida resident, these are the state's rules for the car.

Deadline
Register within 10 days of starting work in Florida or enrolling children in a Florida public school.
VIN check
An out-of-state car needs its VIN checked in person before Florida will title it. A notary, a police officer or a licensed dealer in any state can do it and sign the form, so it can be done before the car ships.
Inspection
No emissions or safety inspection.
Insurance
A Florida policy with personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage liability.
Fees and tax
A $225 fee on a car's first Florida registration. A car bought out of state in the last six months owes 6% state sales tax plus local surtax, less tax paid to the other state.

Checked September 2026 against Florida Statutes 320 and 627, U.S. EPA, Pinellas County Tax Collector. Rules change; the state's own site has the final word.

How the contribution works →

Common questions, plainly answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Ohio to Florida?

Shipping a car from Ohio to Florida costs between $800 and $1,250 for open transport. Cleveland to Orlando and Cincinnati to Naples are the cheapest of these routes and Toledo to Miami the dearest, enclosed transport costs about 40 to 70% more, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.

How long does it take to ship a car from Ohio to Florida?

Shipping a car from Ohio to Florida takes an estimated 3 to 5 days. Cleveland to Orlando is about 1,030 miles and Toledo to Miami about 1,310, and where a car lands in that range has more to do with the other stops the driver makes than with the miles.

What happens if weather delays my shipment?

The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.

Can I put stuff in my car when shipping?

You can leave up to 100 pounds of personal items in one piece of luggage, placed in the trunk or cargo area. Some carriers will accept additional weight for an added fee; we can arrange this for you after booking.

How far ahead should I book?

One to two weeks ahead is enough on most routes. Busy corridors handle shorter notice, and quieter lanes benefit from the full two weeks. Booking earlier does not lower the price; it settles your dates sooner, and the quote is locked for 28 days either way.

Is my car insured during transport?

Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.

When am I charged?

Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.

How do I ship a car?

To ship a car, request a quote with your origin, destination, and vehicle details. Sequoia matches you with a driver according to your pickup window, the driver picks up your vehicle, and delivers it at your destination.
