Tampa is built around a bay, and that bay is the one thing here worth planning a shipment around, because it floods even when a hurricane comes ashore somewhere else. Helene made landfall well to the north in September 2024 and its surge still put five to seven feet of water on the ground around Tampa Bay, then two weeks later Milton’s rain sent the Hillsborough River to record crests. So between June and November a pickup on a low street near the bay or the river can wait until the water goes down. The rest of the year, there’s nothing like it.
Run the VIN first, then get the car looked at in person. A clean title proves less than it seems to here, because a flooded car only gets a salvage or flood brand when an insurer handles the claim, which means one whose owner had no flood cover can come out of a season like 2024 with nothing on its record. NICB’s free VINCheck tells you whether an insurer has declared the car a total loss, and a mechanic in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater can look for what no insurer ever saw, such as silt, a musty smell or rust in places that are hard to reach. Both are worth doing before any money changes hands, since by the time the car is on the truck it’s already yours.

Shipping a car from Tampa costs about $0.65 to $1.25 a mile on an open carrier, with the higher rates on the shorter runs. That comes to $950 to $1,300 for Washington, $1,100 to $1,400 for Chicago or Boston and $1,750 to $2,050 for San Francisco, and once you book, the price holds for 28 days.
A car shipped out of Tampa usually spends 3 to 8 days on the truck. Washington takes 3 to 4 days, Dallas, New York, Chicago and Boston 3 to 5, and Los Angeles and San Francisco 5 to 8. These are estimates, since the driver is picking up and dropping off other cars on the same trip.
Every shipment is insured by the carrier under federal cargo liability requirements.
Nothing is charged at booking. The deposit is charged 7 days before your pickup window opens, and the remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery.
Yes. Every toll, bridge and congestion charge the truck pays on the way is already in your quote, and nothing is added for them after you book.
The truck waits until the road is safe to drive, and your pickup or delivery date moves with it. We'll confirm the driver's new window with you as soon as the road reopens. Snow on the mountain passes and in the northern states, and hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, are the usual causes.
You can leave up to 100 pounds of personal items in one piece of luggage, placed in the trunk or cargo area. Some carriers will accept additional weight for an added fee; we can arrange this for you after booking.
