Houston is an easy place to ship a car from, because freeways leave it in every direction, none of the main ones tolled, and trucks run them all year. What takes a little planning is the start of the trip, which depends on where in the metro your car is and what the sky is doing that day.
Where it is matters more every year, since Houston keeps growing outward. Between 2024 and 2025 the metro added more people than any other in the country, and most of them settled in the suburban counties, around Katy, Cypress and Conroe and out to Waller County, so a Houston pickup is often a long way from downtown. That’s why we ask for the real address when you book rather than the nearest big suburb: the driver plans the pickup window around it. Once the car reaches I-10, I-45 or US 290, the rest is ordinary interstate driving.
In Houston it doesn’t take a hurricane to close a road. A heavy downpour in any month can fill the underpasses and a few low stretches of freeway, and when it does the city and county barricade them until the water goes down. A loaded car carrier keeps off flooded roads like any other vehicle, so on a day like that the pickup waits until the route to you is open again.
Check its history before you book the truck, because Houston has flooded badly more than once, Harvey in 2017 worst of all, and not every flooded car ends up with a flood title. When an insurer writes one off, the new title says so. A car whose owner never made a claim has no record at all, though, and some written-off cars are cleaned up and retitled in another state, which erases the trail. The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck will show whether a participating insurer has declared the car a total loss, but since no database catches everything, it’s worth paying a local mechanic to look at a car you can’t see yourself.
