Chicago loses more people to the rest of the country than it gains from it, about 34,000 more in the year to mid 2025, and the cars that go with them leave on I-90, I-94, I-80 or I-55, whichever points the right way. Most of those runs are ordinary interstate driving once the car is loaded. East in winter is the exception, because between November and February lake-effect bands off Lake Michigan can drop two inches of snow an hour on northwest Indiana, right where those interstates leave Illinois, and Indiana State Police have shut 30 miles of the Toll Road during one. If a band like that lands on your date, the truck waits it out and the date moves.
